FIGHTER FEATURE

mlee feat fighter

We sat down with the Mayweather Promotions’ young prospect to get insight on who is outside of the ring. We learned everything from his favorite music to his biggest motivations, and he shared advice for all aspiring fighters looking to make an entrance into the sport.

MP: If you could go back in time and watch any fight live, which one would it be and why?

ML: Tommy Hearns vs. Marvin Hagler the first fight. It’s the best fight of all-time.  I choose that fight because, as a south paw Marvin “Marvelous” Hagler displayed perfectly how to beat an orthodox fighter. I watched that fight over and over because I liked his technique. I watch so many videos of many different fighters and Hagler is who I feel closest to as a fighter.

MP: Who/What has been your biggest motivation so far?

ML: The struggles I have been through are a constant reminder that I have no choice but to be successful. I would have to say that’s played a huge role in motivating me to get to where I am. Coming from where I come from, I know the life that would be waiting for me if I was to give up and not give boxing my all. I am from Sacramento, I moved out when I was turning 16, that was the same year I went through the hardest things in my life. I lost both of my parents from my life temporarily that year, due to some things my parents were forced to do in order to provide for our family. I vowed I would never ever go back, I guess its similar to Floyd’s situation, he used boxing as a vehicle to never go back to where he came from. Floyd is a big role model to me, he motivates me by showing me how boxing can be a means to provide for my family, and myself, legally. Boxing is something I can be proud of.

MP: Where would you like to see yourself in ten years?

ML: I see myself as a world champion holding titles in multiple weight classes. I see myself continuing my efforts to be a positive role model. My foundation “Be Ambitious” will be on a worldwide level, and even more successful in helping the youth discover their dreams, and making their visions become a reality.  I will still be boxing of course, I see myself as another Bernard Hopkins, I started boxing at an older age so I have a lot more in me!

MP: What impacts has boxing had on you personally?

ML: Positively boxing has helped me control and deal with anger issues. Boxing has given me discipline, because I didn’t have guidance growing up. Boxing has been the biggest influence in helping me become who I am today. My fuse was short, now I have learned to control myself.

MP: How do you spend your free time when you’re not in the ring?

ML: When I’m not in the ring I’m with my family. I relax and read a lot. A lot of people don’t know that about me. Right now I am reading the Art of Mastery by Robert Greene. Its great in helping me master a lot of what I am doing right now.

MP: In-N-Out or Fat Burger?

ML: Neither. I don’t eat fast food.

MP: So we know you’re from Cali, who’s the greatest west coast rapper dead or alive?

ML: Alive – Nipsey Hussle, definitely have to listen to “That’s How I Knew”

Dead – Tupac for sure, favorite song would have to be “Hell Raiser”

MP: Advice?

ML: Work hard. The best advice I received was to work hard, so I encourage everyone else to do the same no matter what their craft is. Even when you want to give up, remember why you began in the first place.

Thank you Maurice Lee for dedicating your time to the fans and allowing them to get to know more about you!

FAN FEATURE

This quarter we gave the fans a chance to participate in an art contest. This contest consisted of fans posting a piece of artwork they’ve designed, featuring either Floyd Mayweather or any Mayweather Promotions fighter. After narrowing it down to a handful of artists, it finally came down to one artist who truly stood out to us. First sight of his artwork shows how much time and detail was put into each design. We are excited to announce Lance Lucas, better known as his artist name @darealicon as our Fan Feature this quarter. Over the last several months he has designed and submitted over 10 pieces of art. For that, we THANK YOU  for being a true Mayweather Promotions supporter!

IG: @darealicon

WHO IS DAREALICON?

MP: When did you find out you had a talent in art?

LL: I started doing art in preschool, I got good at it when I was around 10 years old.

MP: Where would you like your artistic talents to take you?

LL: I would like my skills to make me a millionaire one day, I want to become the biggest digital artist in America and build my own team of artist and open up art shops around the United States.

MP: What is one of your proudest pieces of art and why?

LL: My favorite piece is definitely the one I did of Floyd that won the contest. I got a lot of recognition from that and it was a proud moment for me because I beat out all the other great artists.

MP: What do you like most about Floyd Mayweather and how does he relate to your art?

LL: I love Floyd because he represents excellence and dedication; it applies to my art because I put in the hard work to make it what it is. Hours of work and hundreds of layers of detail.

MP: Anything else you’d like to mention, or like for us to know?

LL: I went from having no job to doing digital art full time, when I put the dedication and hard work in, it changed my life. I saw the potential of what I could accomplish, and if I buckled down and focused, I turned what I loved doing into a substantial income.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

We appreciate all our fans who participated in our fan art entries and thank you all for your support. We look forward to more weekly #FanArtFriday submissions! We could only choose one Fan this quarter, but we wanted to show love to everyone else who participated!

STAFF FEATURE

STEVEN NEWSLETTER STAFF

This quarter we chose to feature a staff member from The Mayweather Boxing Club. The roles in keep the gym going day in and day out are imperative to the success of the Mayweather Promotions and our fighters. Steven Cartledge is this quarters feature, we got to know him a little better as he provides advice and encouragement throughout his interview, thats applicable to anyone at any age.

MP: How did you get your start at Mayweather Boxing Club and what is your role?

SC: I came from New Jersey four years ago, and wanted to get into something different. It was by the blessing from Floyd that I am here today. We had a good rapport, and I told him I would give him my all and keep the gym in good standing.

MP: Tell us what you do on a daily basis at the Mayweather Boxing Club.

SC: I help with maintenance, I work with the fighters exercising and cardio with them, and anything else that needs to be done around the gym. I enjoy working with the fighters every day. Some of them come to me for advice. I have a lot of life experience, and I just want to give something back to them that will encourage them. I let them know to work hard and things will come out okay. I count my blessings and I am thankful every day. Floyd didn’t have to give me a job, he is my boss and cousin. This is more than just a job, I am doing something positive and beneficial.

MP: What fighters do you work closely with at the gym?

SC: Lately, I have been working with Ishe Smith, recent winner from 9/16. I was honored to join Ishe’s camp. I also work with Rosco Hill a new fighter, he’s an amateur and I have been working to help him get ready for his pro debut. I understand you have to start somewhere and work from the bottom up and helping these fighters grow is rewarding for all of us .

MP: What is the most rewarding thing about your position at MBC?

SC: I love talking to people, I love seeing the kids come in and their reactions. The kids are so amused, and in awe when they step into Mayweather’s gym. It makes me proud to see that my cousin brings this joy to everyone who walks in. The gym is my comfort zone, and I love it!

MP: What is the best advice you can give any young aspiring boxers?

SC: Work hard, be responsible, stay focused, and remain disciplined.  Not only in the ring, outside the ring as well. If you keep that mindset it will get you on the track to being a true professional. Your attitude is everything.

I see a lot of fighters come in, they fight hard, but then they get a little comfortable and start to lose focus. Come to the gym, work, and leave. Come to the gym and do what you came to do, what you do in the gym reflects who you are in the ring.

MP: Name your favorite all-time boxing match, and why?

SC: I have to name two fights for this question.

Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Thomas Hearns- We didn’t have much to watch growing up, so boxing was the best thing to watch and Sugar Ray was the pretty boy and fast guy.

The second fight would have to be when Floyd fought Mosely. The reason being is, he took the hardest blows and stood up to him, and let him know who was the king in the ring.

MP: Favorite restaurant in Las Vegas?

SC: The 9 Steakhouse at The Palms

MP: What do you do with your free time away from the gym?

SC: I spend my free time with the family. I am a family guy. I grew up knowing that family comes first. I grew up with Floyd’s mom and we always stayed together. If they want me to go out with the kids, go to the movies, whatever it is, I like to do it.

MP: Is there anything else you want to tell the Mayweather Supporters?

SC: For all aspiring boxers, you only need to know one thing. The best place to come learn is the Mayweather Boxing Club!

I also want to thank Floyd Sr. for being the first person who got me interested in boxing. Back before I moved to Las Vegas, he would let me run with him, show me techniques, training, being responsible, and being an athlete.
